Yi, Chen
Chinese Composer. She was taught violin and piano in infancy and managed to retain her violin during the Cultural Revolution, during which she was sent away to be a labourer. She did receive tuition fom the Beijing Conservatoire once it reopened, though by this time she was active as a musician, leading the Beijing opera company. Chen is an eclectic composer, combining Western and Eastern art music traditions, in sound, harmony and instruments, to form a new vocabulary that is refreshing and intriguing. Her percussion concerto is being featured in the BBC Proms in London on August 19th 2003 with Evelyn Glennie as soloist. Performance in the composer's presence and with the composer's voice. Two other albums of her work are available, her percussion concerto and a collection of orchestral pieces including Momentum, Tu and Dunhuang Fantasy. Email wrpm for details.

Welch, Gillian
Simple arrangements, direct lyrics and a plain style in her own compositions have a powerful effect. She conveys so much sadness while taking Appalachian back-country music to new audiences. With a compelling new cd, Soul Journey, Gillian is currently on tour in the UK and featured in radio programmes this week. See also Bluegrass Female Singers.

Silver, Judith
Judith is a versatile performer who totally integrates her musical skills with her gift as a communicator. She is superb as solist and writer and as member of Anam-Cara and has now produced a unique collection of Yiddish songs.
