American composer, born in Wausau. She explores different and new sounds and as young as 12 won a competition for her achievements in experimenting with sound. During her career she has been a singer, actress, painter and composer. Coates has achieved in absorbing all her artistic activities into her musical output including visual effects. Her later style is characterised by microtones; notes of such pitches not present in the normal tuning system.
