Saariaho, Kaija (1952-)
Finnish composer who was born in Helsinki, and studied at the university there. Her early works use rhythmic cells and repetition, while her later vocabulary becomes more lyrical with rich harmonies. Her opera L'amour de loin was premiered in Salzburg in 2000. From the Grammar of Dreams will be performed in London and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival later this year. Watch for further additions to the catalogue to reveal the diversity of her musical world. Her work will be celebrated during 2001-2 her 50th anniversary year.
