Maconchy, Elizabeth (1907-1994)
English composer. Although her style is not considered to be avant-garde she does use innovative techniques. Her String Quartets have a subtle balance, fragmentary motifs, an often complex texture and a personal mode of expression. These are perhaps her most popular work today but she remains one of our most neglected composers, to be remedied it is hoped in 2007 the centenary of her birth.
