Musgrave, Thea (1928-)
Thea Musgrave celebrates her 75th birthday in 2003 and a new opera The Baroness will be premiered next OctoberEducated at the University of Edinburgh, she later studied with Nadia Boulanger for a time. She has lectured in many universities and has written 9 operas to date. Her style developed from traditional diatonic harmony, through chromatic embellishments, to "controlled plurability"; many different things happening simultaneously. Her Clarinet Concerto is very dramatic and employs an abstract form. Today living in USA she has begun to conduct her own new works, which continue to develop in style and her work is being appreciated after shameful neglect.
