Beamish, Sally (1956-)
Born in London. She studied violin and viola at the RNCM. Her first commission for a work was Dances and Nocturnes (1986). 1994 saw her Violin Concerto, with the theme of war. This has a fluid musical style like many of her works. Her music is colourful and inspirational and she is a leading composer today, most recently having been commissioned to write Knotgrass Elegy for the BBC Proms 2001.
