Bacewicz, Grazyna (1909-1969)
Polish. Educated at the Warsaw Conservatory, and also in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. Her musical style is a Parisian-like mix of neobaroque and neoclassical styles. Her heyday was in the 1940s-50s, when she wrote her String Quartet (1947) and the Concerto for String Orchestra (1948). She continued composing through the 1960s but struggled with the avant-garde trends. She also performed as a concert violinist until the early 1950s. She was a most talented composer, constantly surprising the listener and experimenting.
