Mills, Joan and Heartsong Choir

Joan Mills' lively, welcoming acappella and voice classes begun in 1997 at Aberystwyth Arts Centre and were the foundation on which Heartsong Choir was built. She is the choir's current director. Theatre director, voice practioner and performer, Joan is also the director of 'Giving Voice', the international festival of Voice staged regularly by the Centre for Performance Research. Joan believes everyone posesses an expressive speaking and singing voice-even if it has not been used recently! She uses voice games, improvisation, simple chants and calls to develop the confidence to tackle more complex part songs. her repertoire includes American 'shape-note' songs and stunning traditional Georgian folk harmony, as well as songs from the UK folk traditions. She sings and records regularly with Frankie Armstrong and their third colaberative album "Garden of Love" was released in 1999.

Heartsong Choir has developed from the original classes into a community choir with some 30 members, meeting weekly in Aberystwyth, to learn new material from a variety of tutors to rehearse a growing repetoire. They have given concerts for local community events as well as for international audiences at 'Giving Voice' and are about to record their first CD of acappella songs from around the world.
