  Leonarda, Isabella (1620-1704)

Born in Novara, Italy. Joined the church at 16. She composed 2 motets dedicated to the nuns. In all she composed over a 100 works, all for church usage, including Masses and Psalms. She abided by the restrictions of her day, setting only the Kyrie, Credo and Gloria sections of the mass. Despite certain draconian restrictions, Leonarda developed her musical style structuring her works using varied repetitions, as well as strophic setting of texts.
