Beach, Amy (1867-1944)
American composer who was influenced by the Romantic symphonists. She was the first American female composer to achieve success with large scale works. A prolific composer, her works include songs, piano pieces, chamber music, concertos, and a symphony. Her musical language remained part of the rich nineteenth century tradition, with chromatic harmony and lyrical melodies. This is matched in her vocal music with an expert setting of the text producing a clear delivery of the poetry; however she is most famed for her larger scale works.
