Cozzolani, Chiara Margarita (1602-1678)

Born in Milan, she joined a convent in 1619. Her first published music came in 1640, and were solo cantatas. Her most well-known work is Vespers (1650). These include pieces in both an older psalm setting for 8 parts and the newer concerto style for 2-5 parts. The Vespers form a large work, using much repetition, sequence and melodic extension. She was unique in placing double choir antiphony along with solo writing; usually in the verses. Once she became an Abbess her composing stopped, but she left a large number of works, many of which survive today.
