  Abe, Keiko (1937-)

Japanese. Percussionist and composer, the first woman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the Society of Percusssive Arts. She gained degrees from Tokyo Gakugei University and teaches worldwide, especially in North America. She writes for her own instrument the marimba, incorporating her virtuoso technique into her own works, creating original and expressive pieces, transforming the marimba from a part of the rhythm section to a concert instrument of complexity and power. Keiko was the guest of honour at the Day of Percussion at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester in 2002 and gave a "masterclass" as well as a dazzling evening performance, solo and with students, including the UK premiere of her Marimba Concertino WAVE for Solo Marimba and 4 percussionists. WRPM was able to buy in on this occasion a selection of Keiko's recordings made in Japan not normally distributed in the UK and Hilary had the honour of meeting Keiko who was very pleased to hear about WRPM. This very limited stock is now exhausted but please use the special order button to indicate your interest if more supplies become available.
