LeFanu, Nicola (1947-)

She is the daughter of Elisabeth Maconchy. She won the Mendelssohn Scholarship, which enabled her to study in America. In 1994 she was appointed the first female professor of Music in UK at York University. She composes and encourages other female musicians. During her stay in USA she encountered pioneering work on Gender and Music, which evidently influenced her greatly. She has written many operas (about 5 to date), all relating to female issues.
