Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179)
German Abbess, writer, artist, visionary and musician. Her compositions include Antiphons and Responds, Sequences and Hymns. Individual in her time, her music was not drawn from plainchant, instead developing melodic frameworks. Ordo Virtutum, the first western morality play, consists of over 80 melodic motifs in a syllabic setting. She used organic structures, never identically repeating anything. Her music has had a massive revival at the end of the 20th century.
