Casulana, Maddalena

Born in Cassola. Educated in Florence. Her first works are four, 4-part Madrigals (1566). These made her the first female composer to be published. However, only her dramatic Second Book of Madrigals (1570) survives in it entirety. Casulana was appreciated by her contemporaries and recognised as an able composer.
