Caccini, Francesca (1587-1640)

Member of the Italian musical family - Caccini. She was the first female to produce an opera, and the first composer of an Italian opera to be stage outside Italy. A prolific composer, her works include opera, sacred and secular songs. Her music uses both modal and tonal harmony. Working in a typically baroque style, her melodies are set above a wallking bass, but includes many unprepared dissonances, and much unique variation, as can be heard in La Liberazio di Ruggiero Dall'isola d'Alcine (1625). She had a mixed reception in her day, but is accepted as a technically proficient and individual composer today.
